8 Newborn Care Mistakes First-Time Moms Make (And How to Avoid Them)

Becoming a new mom is one of life's most beautiful journeys, but it can also feel overwhelming. Here are 8 common newborn care mistakes — and exactly how to avoid them.
1. Skipping Burping After Feeds
When babies feed from a bottle, they swallow air. If not released, it causes gas, fussiness, and sleep disturbance. Burp your baby after every 2-3 ounces during feeding, and once more after the feed ends.
2. Over or Under Dressing
Dress your baby in one extra layer than what you're wearing. In summer, lightweight cotton is best.
3. Improper Bottle Sterilization
Use a steam sterilizer or boil bottles for 5 minutes. Sterilize all feeding equipment for the first 6 months.
4. Unsafe Sleep Position
Always place baby on their back to sleep. Use a firm mattress with no pillows or blankets in the crib.
5. Using Tap Water in Formula
Always use boiled and cooled water for formula preparation.
6. Neglecting Tummy Time
Start with 2-3 minutes of supervised tummy time, 2-3 times daily from week 1.
7. Waking Baby to Feed After First Month
Once your baby is gaining weight well, let them sleep naturally. Trust their hunger cues.
8. Ignoring Baby's Fever
Any temperature above 100.4°F (38°C) in babies under 3 months requires immediate doctor consultation.
